Smoke style is more useful than a universal ranking

Pepper is another descriptor altogether: it should not be treated as a measurement of peat content. Separating those terms makes a comparison more informative than assigning each bottle an unsupported smoke score.
Producer notes are not a standardized blind panel. Bowmore’s description of softer smoke and Lagavulin’s emphasis on intense peat suggest different intended styles, but they do not prove that every drinker will rank them in the same order.
